SnapSplitr Privacy Policy

SnapSplitr helps people scan receipts, split expenses, invite friends to claim items, and save group expense history. This Privacy Policy explains what information SnapSplitr collects, how it is used, and how you can manage your account.
Data Controller

Information We Collect
- Account information, such as your name, email address, password credentials, and Sign in with Apple account identifier when you use Apple sign-in.
- Receipt information, including receipt photos you upload, merchant or receipt titles, line items, prices, tax, tip, and currency details.
- Group and expense information, such as group names, members, saved bills, item assignments, claim links, and settlement details.
- Basic technical information needed to operate the service, such as server logs, request metadata, and error information.
How We Use Information
- To create and manage your SnapSplitr account.
- To scan receipts, extract receipt line items, and calculate expense splits.
- To save your groups and expenses so they are available when you sign in.
- To send or show invite and claim links for people you choose to include.
- To maintain, secure, debug, and improve SnapSplitr.
Use of OpenAI for OCR
SnapSplitr uses OpenAI services to help perform receipt OCR and parse receipt content from images you upload. When you upload a receipt for scanning, the receipt image and related scan settings may be sent to OpenAI so the service can identify receipt titles, line items, prices, tax, and tip. Do not upload receipts containing information you do not want processed for this purpose.
Third-Party Services
SnapSplitr uses third-party service providers to operate the app. These providers process information only as needed to provide their services to SnapSplitr:
- Supabase: database hosting and storage of account, group, invite, and expense-splitting data.
- Render: backend API hosting, server execution, and related operational logs.
- OpenAI: receipt OCR and receipt content parsing from uploaded receipt images.
- GitHub: hosting this Privacy Policy and related static website files through GitHub Pages.
- Cloudflare: DNS, domain configuration, traffic routing, security, caching, and related network logs.
App Permissions
- Camera permission: SnapSplitr requests camera access so you can directly take a photo of a receipt and submit it for OCR recognition.
- Photo library permission: SnapSplitr may request photo library access so you can choose an existing receipt image from your device for OCR recognition. If the app uses Apple's limited photo picker, the app receives only the photos you select.
- Contacts permission: SnapSplitr currently does not need to read your device contacts if you create a claim link and share it yourself. If a future invite-friends feature requests contacts access, SnapSplitr will ask for permission in the app, use contacts only to help you choose invite recipients, and will not upload your address book to the server for unrelated purposes.
Sharing
SnapSplitr does not sell your personal information. We share information only when needed to operate the app, when you choose to share an invite or claim link, when required by law, or to protect SnapSplitr and its users.
International Data Transfers
SnapSplitr is operated using OpenAI and other third-party hosting and infrastructure providers. Your information, including receipt images and app data, is very likely to be transferred to, stored in, or processed in the United States and may also be processed in other countries where our service providers operate. These countries may have privacy and data protection laws that differ from those in your location.
Where required by applicable law, SnapSplitr relies on appropriate transfer safeguards and legal bases for cross-border transfers, such as your consent, performance of the service you request, contractual safeguards with service providers, and other lawful transfer mechanisms available under applicable privacy laws.
Data Retention and Deletion
We keep account, group, and receipt-splitting data while your account is active or as needed to provide the service. You can delete your account from the Profile page in the app. Account deletion removes your user record and saved account-associated data from SnapSplitr systems, subject to reasonable backup, security, fraud-prevention, and legal retention needs.
United States Privacy Rights
Depending on your U.S. state of residence and subject to legal limitations, you may have privacy rights such as the right to know or access the personal information we process about you, the right to request deletion, the right to correct inaccurate information, the right to receive a portable copy of certain information, the right to opt out of sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or certain profiling, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising privacy rights.
SnapSplitr does not sell personal information. To exercise privacy rights, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request. If your state law gives you an appeal right, you may appeal our decision by replying to our response or contacting the same email address with the subject line "Privacy Appeal."
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No online service can guarantee absolute security.
Children
SnapSplitr is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Choices
- You can update profile defaults in the app.
- You can stop uploading receipt photos at any time.
- You can delete your account from the Profile page.
- You can contact us to ask privacy questions or request help with your data.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
